Go to Start > Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks > Add Scheduled Task > the Scheduled Task Wizard will appear, click Next.

In the next screen, click the Browse button

Go your C drive > WINDOWS folder > system32 folder > find the file named defrag.exe (NOT dfrg.msc) and click once on it, then click Open

Select monthly. Click Next.

Choose a time and day (usually after ChkDsk and Disk Cleanup). Make sure the time doesn't conflict with any other tasks. Click Next.

Note: Since Windows Update on my machine(s) is(are) scheduled for 3AM, I tried to avoid scheduling anything that would conflict with these sometimes critical updates. And, since I get up at 5AM, I adjusted the start time for these scheduled events so I wouldn't have to wait for them to finish. That is, after all, the whole point of scheduling these things. ;-)

Enter your password twice and click Next

Verify your settings are correct.

Check the box next to Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish.

Click Finish

In the Run: box, at the end of the line that says C:\WINDOWS\system32\defrag.exe, type c: ensuring there is a space between .exe and c: and then click OK

Enter your password twice and click OK

Go to Start > Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks and make sure your defrag task is there. Right-click on it and select Properties to make any changes.

That's it!

Your fully automatic defrag has been scheduled!
