Virus Protection and Windows Update Lab:

Some parts of this lab you may have completed in class.  If not, please complete the following…

I. Running and Installing Windows Updates

1.      Log in to your computer as an Administrator.

2.      Close all open applications.

3.      Click on the Start button and select Internet Explorer.

4.      In the Internet Explorer window, go to the Tools menu and select Windows Updates.

5.      If you see a window entitled "Security Warning" appear as the Windows Update site loads, do NOT check the box for Always trust content from Microsoft Corporation and click Yes. Click Install on the web page.

6.      Click the link for Express Install. Windows will scan for available updates for your computer.

7.      If the High Priority Updates section lists - No updates available, continue to the next section on Configuring Automatic Updates.

8.      If your computer needs to install Windows XP Service Pack 2, you should make sure you have backed up all of your personal files before continuing to install this service pack.

 .        Click Install.

a.       A Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard will soon appear. Click Next.

b.      Select I agree and click Next.

c.       Click Next.

d.      Windows Update will proceed to inspect your configuration, archive your old system files, and continue the download and install of the Service Pack. This process will take some time.

e.       When installation is complete, click Finish. Your computer will restart.

f.        Upon restarting, a Help protect your PC screen may appear. Select Help protect my PC by turning on Automatic Updates now and then click the Next button at the lower right corner of the screen.

g.       There may be more critical or high priority updates that need to be installed. Repeat instructions starting from step 4 above to launch Internet Explorer.

9.      If any High Priority Updates are listed, click Install.

10.  A window titled Installing Updates will appear.

11.  When installation is complete, click Restart Now.

12.  There may be more critical or high priority updates that need to be installed after your computer restarts. Repeat the instructions in this section starting at step 2 for Running and Installing Windows Updates. You will know you have completed the installation of all critical Windows Update items when you see the results outlined in step 8 in this section. After you have installed all of the high priority updates, continue to the next section on Configuring Automatic Updates.

II. Configuring Automatic Updates

Once you have finished Running and Installing Windows Updates, you can configure Automatic Updates to automatically download and install updates at a particular time of day.

1.      Go to the Start menu and click on the Control Panel.

2.      Double-click on Automatic Updates.

3.      The above graphic shows the Automatic Option being Selected.  If you choose this option, also select an appropriate time for the downloads to occur.  I actually recommend choosing the second option for more control over what gets installed on your computer.

4.      Click OK.

III.    Virus Protection Software:

  1. Click è Start è Programs è Symantic Client Security è Symantic Antivirus
  2. Click on “Live Update” and follow the instructions
  3. Once your virus definitions are updated, you are ready to scan.  It is important than any programs running be shutdown.  Click on Full Scan and then Scan.  This program can take hours to run so you might want to run this overnight.
  4. Check the Scan results.  Any Viruses found?   Follow the instructions to quarantine or delete the virus.
  5. Configure your Virus Software for automatic updates and protection.  Click the configure tab on the left.  I recommend setting File System, Internet E-mail and Tamper Autoprotect options at a minimum.
